PhilTel ☎️

Hi, we're a group called PhilTel aiming to install free-to-use in . We are having an install party at @iffybooks on December 17th where we will install our first phone (more info here, iffybooks.net/event/philtel-fr)!

We will also be distributing a zine that explains the project and some of the interesting things you can do with the phone.

For more info, check out philtel.org

@philtel Have you had any problems with outgoing voice on an incoming call? Whenever I call out the outgoing voice works well. I suspect there's some connection issues with RTP but not sure.

@rtn We did have one-way audio issues, though I forget which party was affected. It turns out that there is a range of ports that RTP was trying to use that were locked down on the server. If you are running asterisk with the sip logger on you can see the connection fail in real-time. I couldn't get consensus on the actual port range to open or if you can restrict it from asterisk but since we are on a VPN I could open things up pretty well. We haven't had an issue since.

@philtel Ah. Currently I'm connecting to the sip server provided by eventphone.de while getting started. I should probably try out Asterix and have a custom VPN as well. Thanks for input.

I'm excited for the next iteration, rotary dial, operator assisted payphones!

@philtel @iffybooks this is amazing! ^_^

Any open specs so we can implement this in other places around the world?

@Killab33z_OG Yes! Everything we have internally documented already is also available on our website: philtel.org/blog We do still need to write up something about the asterisk config and ATA config, though many of the techniques we use are pretty boilerplate. Hell, you can even connect an ATA directly up to a VoIP provider and bypass asterisk for a simpler setup and have an analog phone online through it in 15 minutes.
